Deaf, Blind, and Deafblind Dogs, Young and Old, Differences in Care!
Deaf. blind. and deaf blind dogs come in all sizes, shapes, ages, and comfort levels. These two little dogs in the picture were born deafblind. They didn't have to adjust from being able to see and hear to living in dark silence. Even still, they might be anxious and unable to adapt to changes in their environment like some with similar disabilities. Yet, these two are very easy going and unphased by what might seem like major challenges. Of course, breed mix and temperament also play a big role in how deaf, blind, and deafblind dogs manage.
Older dogs who gradually lose their hearing and vision tend to adapt but not as easily as their younger counterparts. They tend to become disoriented and have trouble adjusting to changes in their environment, especially if they lose their hearing and sight abruptly. Many older dogs have some degree of dementia which also adds to their difficulties.
Many people who see younger deaf and blind dogs doing so well, responding to tap signals, verbal cues, and hand signals (depending on their disability), and moving about in their environment without hesitation, feel that their older dogs should be doing the same. When they don't, these pet parents feel like they need to do more for their pets. They unfairly compare their older dogs to younger dogs which isn't always realistic.
In this webinar, we'll discuss caring for deaf, blind, and deaf blind dogs in the younger and older age groups. We'll compare, share insights and experiences, and develop an understanding of reasonable expectations, support, and specifics we can do for our deaf, blind, and deafblind dogs of all ages.
